Are you looking for fresh coffee made your way at an affordable price? Look no farther than this Hamilton Beach Single Serve Coffee Maker. This coffeemaker is simple to use and does not make a mess. Just insert your favorite coffee pod, pour in the water, and push start. It's that simple. This versatile unit will brew into a regular sized coffee cup or a travel mug.

This Hamilton Beach product is the essence of simplicity. The base incorporates a Drip Tray upon which sits the Cup Rest, the cup being any one of your preference. Rising above the base is the upright body of the device, on the right side of which is the Control Panel, which is nothing more than two push-buttons, one for "regular" and one for "bold". The interior of the upright presumably houses the heating element. (I didn't disassemble it to find out.) The top of the brewer incorporates the Water Reservoir and the Showerhead, the latter dispensing hot water into The Scoop Brew Basket, which sits in the Filter Holder, at the bottom of which is the non-disposable Secondary Filter, which nestles into the Filter Well, which overhangs the top of the cup or mug. The Scoop, Filter Holder, and Filter Well are easily removable for rinse cleaning after use although only the first two need such attention on a routine basis.

The Cup Rest is made of stainless steel. The remainder of the contraption is of either black or faux-stainless steel plastic. Is it sturdy? Well, that depends on the long or short view. Much to the dismay of environmentalists, I imagine the plastic of a discarded 49981 will persist in a landfill until the Sun explodes. However, if one of the cats knocks it off the counter onto the floor, I doubt the brewer will remain intact. And I also disbelieve that it will stay operational over another twenty-one year span; I know I won't.

Mimicking my wife's morning brew-up ritual, I poured 12 oz of water into the reservoir and one and one-half scoops of ground mud into brew basket, plugged the gadget in, pushed the "bold" button, and waited. But not for long. In something less than three minutes, I had a cuppa Joe that was pleasantly hot - but not too hot. And, although I'm no aficionado of jitter juice, it seemed of a strength that would satisfy all but the most jaded of the Navy's salt-encrusted and barnacled CPOs.

Is THE SCOOP 49981 BREWER the best morning thunder-maker on the market? Probably not as indicated by the wife's observation that the Cup Rest would function better if heated as the beverage will otherwise become tepid if she's delayed too long while getting together her oatmeal and blueberries. Other than that, however, she's completely satisfied, and that is something which compels me to award a grateful four stars to Hamilton Beach and an offering of a bag of gourmet dark roast at the altar of Hera, the Greek goddess of marriage.
