Not for Audiophiles, Good for Casualphiles ,Awesome Price!

I am a music lover and occasional amateur music maker. I'm not an audiophile, despite having a large music collection that I regularly cycle through. I use an iPhone for listening to music, and while I rip at V0, I don't think too much about what the bitrate on songs from iTunes or Amazon are when I buy them. I'm a casualphile.

The Beats have a great look, which is why they're popular amongst the 20-somethings right now. They have a good bass, which is fantastic for those who listen to certain genres, like hip-hop, but rubbish for others like jazz and classical that rely heavily on the midrange. I've found the Studios sound fantastic with classic rock, luckily, which is about 85% of my collection. For other genres, I generally know when I'll be going for them and pack headphones accordingly.

The noise canceling mechanism on these headphones is not as powerful as my $100 pair of Sony MDR-NC40s, which baffles me. The Beats do have a seal around the ear to block out sound, but require two batteries whereas the Sony, which does a much better job with less to work with, uses only one. I expect that the style of the Beats required a smaller, less power-efficient module, since it's contained within the headphones themselves. The Sonys also have a better balance to their sound (to my ears) for genres mentioned above that the Beats tend to muddy.

If you're looking for a great pair of headphones, especially noise-canceling ones, and you want something high-end, do your best to listen to the headphones with your own music first. Don't trust displays with built-in tracks; try to hunt down someone who owns a pair for you to try if you need to. All of the reviews in the world will not give you the same answers as listening to them yourself. I like my Beats a lot, and I'm going to get a lot of use out of them, but they're not going to satisfy everyone, especially at a $300 price-point.
